Black Voice Newspaper

Black Voice Newspaper

The Voice is the only British national Black weekly newspaper currently operated in the United Kingdom owned by the The Gleaner Company Limited and publisher, GV Media Group Limited, aimed at the British African-Caribbean community. The paper is based in the London Docklands and is published every Thursday. When it was founded in 1982 there were few backers for a publication like The Voice. Most observers were of the opinion that it would never catch on, that it wouldn't last. Yet thirty years on it has become one of the most successful Black enterprises in Britain.
Considering its popularity, surprisingly little is generally known about the true origin and development of The Voice. It began back in 1981 when Val McCalla, who was then working on a London local paper called the East End News, led a group of businessmen and journalists in a new and uncertain endeavour — the creation of a weekly paper which would cater for the interests of British-born Black people.
